The Anritsu S820E

High-Performance Handheld Cable and Antenna Analyzer

The Anritsu S820E is a high-performance handheld cable and antenna analyzer designed for microwave systems. It brings bench-level capabilities (including optional Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and Vector Voltmeter (VVM) modes) into the field in a portable instrument.

Key Features :

  • Wide Frequency Coverage: Models cover from 1 MHz up to 8 GHz, 14 GHz, 20 GHz, 30 GHz or even 40 GHz.
  • High Dynamic Range: Up to ~110 dB dynamic range (e.g., for 20 MHz-40 GHz range) enabling precise measurements even in challenging RF environments.
  • One-port & Two-port Measurement Capability: Standard 1-port measurements (Return Loss, VSWR, Cable Loss, Distance-To-Fault (DTF), Phase, Smith Chart) and 2-port transmission/swept cable loss using external sensors.
  • Optional VNA / VVM Modes: With optional software unlocks, the S820E can perform full-reversing 4 S-parameter VNA measurements, or VVM measurements (A/B & B/A ratio) for absolute DUT measurement.
  • Modern Field-Ready Design: Features an 8.4-inch color touchscreen (800×600 or similar), USB/Ethernet connectivity for remote control, video inspection probe mode (VIP mode) for fiber connector inspection (optional) and rugged build.
  • Long Reach for Large or Complex Systems: Supports transmission measurement with external USB sensor and extender cables (e.g., up to 85 m) for measuring long coaxial or waveguide assemblies.
  • Field Durability / Compliance: Meets rugged field-use specifications (e.g., MIL-PRF-28800F Section 4.5.6.3 for explosive atmosphere safe usage) in some models.

Why It’s Useful

  • For engineers and technicians working on microwave links, antenna systems, radar, waveguides, etc., who require very wide bandwidth and high accuracy in the field.
  • When measurement needs go beyond standard cable/antenna analyzers into VNA-style S-parameter and complex DUT characterization.
  • In challenging environments where high dynamic range and rugged connectivity matter (e.g., telecom masts, military, aviation).
  • Future-proofing: the hardware supports future upgrades via software options, so you can expand functionality as requirements evolve.
